Introduction
Burgundy 2006 - Wonderful whites and classic reds
Our offer of 2005 Burgundy this time last year was so successful that we have been back again to taste and select the best wines from the 2006 vintage.
2006 is an excellent vintage for white wines with lovely ripe fruit which can be enjoyed in their youth. We have some superb examples from Chablis and the well-known appellations of the Côte de Beaune from Meursault to Montrachet.
Rain affected the harvest for some of the reds and so selection here has been very important. The best wines are superior to 2004. Compared to the outstanding 2005s (which have closed up considerably in the last year), there is less density of fruit, but lovely aroma and the true character of the terroir shines through. The 2006 reds can generally be enjoyed earlier than the 2005s as there is less acidity and tannin. The Côte de Nuits fared slightly better than the Côte de Beaune and this is reflected in our choice of wines.
We are pleased to report that prices have remained relatively stable from the vineyards, apart from some pressure on the top whites created by strong demand. However the euro exchange rate has meant a slight overall increase. Prices for Grand Crus reflect their rarity value as the amounts made are sometimes only a barrel or two.
There are some lovely wines to be had at good value prices. I hope you enjoy reading about them!
